“The key issue here is that grey hair, natural or otherwise, is like a white blanket; everything shows.” Beth Minardi.
This summer my hair is the longest it’s been since I was 40 years old. The women in my family go grey in their late 20s and 30s and I was covering mine with the auburn color that put me in mind of my Irish grandmother, someone who I had only met through photos as she died at the age I was then. That summer 28 years ago I got a tattoo and went salsa dancing; my hair, a flag flying in the summer breeze and whipping around, as my partner turned and twirled me across the dance floor in small downtown clubs. This summer my hair is like a long white blanket, and while always important to take the right care of your grey hair, it’s even more important for me right now as there is so much more of it to see. I love the way it wraps around my face when I turn quickly, how the weight of it feels on my back. It evokes memories of that long-ago summer and my feet itch to dance. It’s easy to cut, just some trimming around the edges. I remain grateful to my women ancestors who have passed on to me the gift of an even color. Perhaps all the short haircuts my mother gave me when young resulted in my hair keeping its thickness and strength.
Regardless of whatthose who came before you passed down or not when it comes to how our hair ages along with us, Hair Biology offers a full line of products that address the issues that come to you and your hair as age creeps into your life. Whether it’s thinning, greying, dryness, or flyaways there’s something that can meet our aging hair needs. During summer, the harsh glare of the sun, hard water, pollution and swimming all bring challenges in maintaining the health and color of our hair whether we are naturally grey or coloring. And let’s not even talk about humidity and the frizzies.
In a previous blog post, I introduced you to the Hair Biology Silver and Glowing Collection. The line is hydrating and includes a purple color depositing shampoo and conditioner with UV protection that keeps that “white blanket” from turning yellow. They’ve introduced a new product just in time for me to coax my unruly summer strands back to sleek and shiny. The Silver Shine Serum is a lightweight cream that melts into a clear serum restoring moisture andshine while smoothing and softening.
Used on dry or damp after-shower hair, all you need is a pump or two to coax your hair into the style you want or need for the day’s adventures. What I love most is that it’s light and not greasy the way other hair serums can be.
For those who’ve colored their hair, as I did when I was 40, Hair Biology has also launched a new product line-The Vivid and Protected Collection. There’s a shampoo, conditioner and color sealing mask to keep your color-treated hair feeling like silk and preventing your color from fading. Both the Silver Shine Serum and the Vivid and Protected Collection have launched on Target online this month where you can also find the full range of Hair Biology products.
What challenges are you facing with summer hair and how are you meeting them?
*A general note: Hair Biology products are free from sulfates and parabens. They contain biotin which improves the body’s keratin infrastructure and supports strong healthy hair growth.</p

Imy still highlighting mine because my grey is not uniform. But, whatever the colour my problem, in humidity, has always been frizz. Just no way around it, alas.

I am so ready for fall!

I still color my hair, because my stylist accurately observed that going grey aged me by 15 years. I use an herbal color product from Italy. I look 20 years younger than my age. I preferred you with the shorter hairstyle . To each her own. Viva la difference!
AccidentalIconon September 12, 2021 at 8:52 am
Perhaps our difference is that I am not interested in looking “younger” whatever that might mean. To me it feels like someone is trying to control me, that younger is better. I’m old and I embrace all the gains and losses that come with age. I appreciate and respect your choices though and as you say difference is good.

Upon your recommendation I started using Hair Biology for Silver hair and love the products. Just ordered the Serum. I let my silver grow in at the start of lockdown March 2019. I also let my hair grow longer and I couldn’t be happier that I made those two choices. I get many compliments on my natural hair color and as Jane Fonda said in Grace and Frankie “I know longer let the color of my hair define how young I feel” Power to grey hair. Thank you for your inspiring blogs

Congratulations, happy you like the products and love the quote.

I should have said lockdown 2020, though at times it does seem longer
AccidentalIconon September 12, 2021 at 9:56 am
Indeed it does.

I have board sraight hair…I like it though. Years ago…I went through a curly perm, rock and roll, phase. It was too tight for 2 weeks…perfect for about a minute…then was in tthe growing out stage forever. I finally accepted that straaight was what my hair wanted to do…so started wearing it in a ‘Bob’ similar to your old style. I like the way shorter hair, meaning chin length, moves and feels. I got over long hair when I was young and was eating pancakes one morning and looked down to find my waistlength hair in the plate…in the syrup. That was it…my hair crept up my back until it was chin length. That way…no…shock…no regrets. Longer hair makes sperfect ense in NY…cold weather…snow. Here in the South…I will keep it shorter.

Sounds like the perfect choice for you!

Frizzies for me as well. I find keratin treatments are a life saver and cut down my blow dry time in half.
AccidentalIconon September 12, 2021 at 9:53 am
I’ll have to try it!

I love my long, grey COVID hair.
My 60 plus lifestyle is very active and I take care in the washing and conditioning of my hair.
Great to be able to wear up or down
Never thought I would have long grey hair.
Shall check out as to whether Hair Biology us available in Australia xxAccidentalIconon September 12, 2021 at 9:49 am
I like that I can pull it back, put it up so versitile.

Having wavy long hair, humidity is my summer hair-issue. I’m trying very diligently to use curly-girl management techniques and am having some success. I, too, have the longest hair I’ve had for many years. Have a brilliant fall!

I’m perfecting my “skunk” stripe, which I love. I tried not coloring for about 4 months. I was hoping to have enough grey to stop and go naturale…not so, well not yet. I have seen better-looking old alleycats, than the non-pattern of grey on my head!
I have wanted grey hair since my twenties, ( now 66) begged hairdressers who told me it just wasn’t possible (back then). Unperturbed and believing I knew better, I decided to DIY.
When I removed the towel my hair was only what I can describe as “Hazard Orange”! I borrowed a headscarf from my Mother and prayed I didn’t run into anyone I knew as I headed to the store to try and find something that would at least tone the color down.
So grey hair is still just a dream for me…and anyway, as my hair is butt length, who knows how long it will take to grow out!AccidentalIconon September 12, 2021 at 9:45 am
What a great story! Hazard Orange!
Marg Gibbson August 25, 2021 at 2:02 am
Like you, my hair is the longest it’s been in ages. I am 64. I let it go greyish for 4 years and it always seemed to lack the “real soft grey” that I liked, so at the beginning of this year, I coloured it mahogany brown. I do like it but, here we go again, the greys come through fast and it needs my colouring hands every 5 weeks.

I am a hairdresser and loved that you quoted Beth Minardi. You make silver look especially great. I have to say some white blanket clients struggle with keeping mineral build-up off the hair. I attribute it to their water and sun exposure. I usually send them home with a packet of Malibu Mineral remover. It is important to leave the treatment on long enough to do its thing. This is something that can not be rushed. I love your robe too. Enjoy

Thanks, I.m going to try that tip. I use a good cleansing shampoo by Quair that seems to do the trick as well.

Have stopped tinting 15 years ago. I inherited my mom’s silver, and all it needs is better conditioners,

The color and texture are key.

The women of my family are cursed with hair that thins to practically nothing by the time they’re 80. I will be there in a few months. What can I do but to wear hats, so that’s what I do. Needless to say I love and admire anybody with a real head of hair, and I’m also jealous of curly hair.
AccidentalIconon September 12, 2021 at 9:31 am
I always wanted curly hair and girls with curly hair wanted my straight hair.
Annon August 25, 2021 at 9:19 am
My hair is longer then it has every been, about half way down my back. Its also around the same color as yours, and I’m loving it. I just wash and go now. Its so much better then all the hair products I used when it was shorter. By the way, your hair looks fabulous at this length on you.

I am blessed with a very thick head of hair. Since summer was coming and Covid dictated hair apps. I decided to let mine just grow with only 1 tim in 1 1/2 years. I am naturally a strawberry blonde but at 72 I have been coloring since I was 60. I did it as a tribute to my mom who died when I was almost 60 and she always wanted me to start coloring…so I did…and since enjoying staying at home during the pandemic….I have finally learned to apply more than mascara, eyebrow shading and lipstick. hahaha best wishes.

Love my natural curly/wavy hair. It is who I am. Messed about with hair straighteners in the past but it so did not suit me. Even though some (cannot refer to them as friends simply because, in hindsight, they weren’t) said that the straight look suited me. What is this issue, almost an obsession, with frizz? Embrace your more natural self. May just discover a greater contentment with more than your hair.
Mary Groganon August 25, 2021 at 12:22 pm
I love my long hair and have had it natural for decades now. My only challenge is frizz in the summer. I use Christophe Robin no frizz. A little goes a long way, it works, plus it is good for my hair. When my hair gets a little too long I get a trim. Easy hairstyle.
Mary Groganon August 25, 2021 at 12:26 pm
Your hair looks great and love the blouse. My only challenge is frizz. At present use Christophe Robin no frizz and it does the trick, plus is good for y hair.

What beautiful hair. The photo of silvery-silky blanketing your face is ethereally gorgeous. lucky you to have good hair as well as good bones. i love that you have grown it out, and your personal hair-story. i have also grown mine long, and at seventy-five still color it ’cause my eyebrows remain dark – great excuse – and i’m French. please excuse sporadic caps in text, ancient pc failing. Despite it’s lacks my hair and self were hired by vidal sasoon in montreal in the seventies when i was an old model at thirty-two, unheard of in those days.
my mother also kept her daughters’ and her own hair short. later in life this practice of short hair and shorn necks made me sick, sick at heart, such denial of the feminine – in my family i mean. not sure about others. So growing out my hair no matter how thin and fine had to be. like lyn i too love to feel it on my shoulders and back – more like a feather tickle, but nevertheless! And i do not mind the endorsement a product you believe in. it means your blog is very successful!kbon August 25, 2021 at 4:47 pm
I am still coloring my hair. Being a red head is part of my identity. My hair is also naturally curly so summer humidity causes it to expand and frizz….my signature summer look.
AccidentalIconon September 12, 2021 at 9:25 am

Hair is longer, but in a shag. I have stick straight hair, yet my stylist manages to create curve, curl, and body. I’m 67 and have used Aveda products since in my 20’s. Pure plant essences, no chemicals. No one could pay me to switch to anything else. I wash, apply some curl enhancer, and air dry. Best hair of my life!
AccidentalIconon September 12, 2021 at 9:23 am
I just got a haircut in an Aveda salon, their products are wonderful.

I’m hair obsessed. I lost about ¼ of it after I retired and can no longer grow it long. This summer I got it cut super short because I cannot stand hair on my neck in the heat, and there was no way to have an actual style with my hair so thin. It’s okay, but I’m growing it out to about shoulder length for the fall/winter.

Hair always evolves, doesn’t it?
Linda Turneron September 13, 2021 at 12:51 pm
I love so many of your posts, and this is one of them. Why do so many women believe that if a woman (over ….. what age???), allows her hair to grow long, that it is because they are trying to look younger? When I left a “suit” position in the Chicago suburbs and moved to Vermont, I decided I could leave the short styled hair behind me and grow it long. I have long hair because I love it!!! It is truly who I am at this stage of life and it makes me smile. I feel freer and happier right now with long hair.
AccidentalIconon September 26, 2021 at 7:47 am
You hit it for me, somehow the longer hair is making me feel free.

I so needed to read this post. I have covid hair; its past my shoulders now, at 72. Everyone asks…”when are you getting it cut?” Well, I’m not. I have not colored my hair in over 10 years and I love it this way. It feels authentic to me. I will indeed check out some of the products as I do feel it “flies away” a bit on me. I no longer blow dry it; having moved to Florida, it pretty much dries on its own after ten minutes out of the shower.” I am fortunate to remember my grand grand mom, from Ireland, with her beautiful white hair all the way down her back and how she effortlesssly placed in a bun every morning. Thank you again for always enlightening me.
AccidentalIconon October 12, 2021 at 9:08 am
How wonderful! You gave me a hint of where my thick white hair may have come from, I am half Irish.
